Before & After School

Understanding the progression of a Montessori education may require a paradigm shift for people accustomed to traditional, grade-oriented schools. At each level, the classroom environment protects and respects the child’s rhythm of life. It is a calm, ordered space constructed to match the children’s level of activity.

Students in the lower elementary program continue to use the Montessori materials as a "bridge" from the concrete to the abstract.

Personal computers also are available for use in the classroom.

Language:
When necessary, beginning readers utilize phonetic story books to build their skills. For most students, the reading of age-appropriate novels drives the language portion of this age group’s education. They read and analyze a wide variety of books, and embark on creative writing projects of their own. Individual language assignments also are given, according to the student’s abilities.

Math:
For basic operations such as addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, the Montessori materials are employed. Additional study includes fractions, time, money and word problems.

Cultural:
Detailed study of the continents of the world is undertaken. Physical sciences are introduced, and history is explored through the creation of timelines. Each child’s interests are tapped during individual study of botany and vertebrate/invertebrate animals. An exciting part of this study is the school’s annual Geography-a-thon.
